1st Creative Visual Award 2011 - A USM Short Film & Photography Festival

Let’s face it: 1st Creative Visual Award 2011 – USM Short Film & Photography Festival brings us a new concept. It is the 1st university-based short film festival in Malaysia where not only arts students, but scienece studetns as well are directly involved in producing their filming products signaturing their own master piece. Whether you’re a student looking for ways to break into the fest circuit or a film lover looking for new ways to experience film, this student-focused festival should be on your radar. In this inception, it targets student filmmakers and photographers from Universiti Sains Malaysia. This year, we received around one hundred submissions among postgraduate students, including science and arts students.

The organization acts as a kind of incubator for student talents, with prizes to inspire the young filmmakers and photographers to keep plugging away at their passions. Anyone studing in USM can fire up a camera and submit something. The jurys are composed of film director, president of film festival, lecturers majoring on film, students, and one Dato, which add to the peer-approved flavor of the festival. In the meantime, students vote their favorite works at the showcases.

The Creative Visual Award focuses on students’ films/photographs that revolve around themes of humanity, spirituality, scientific knowledge and works that they feel “respect the dignity of the human person and environment.” In other words, the content is slightly more hopeful than entries you might find at other festivals. That’s exact meaning behind the motto of Creative Visual Award - “Visualize Your Dream”.

“It’s less a traditional festival and more a crash-course in film/photography production for students who’ve been looking to try their hand at making short films and photography,” Wang Chang Song, Project director and Chair Jury of Creative Visual Award said.
